Why Bother with CU?
Christian Unions, like Lancaster University, exist because of what Jesus has done: he died on the cross to take the punishment that we deserve for our rebellion against God; and in rising to new life, he has given us a hope of a restored relationship and eternal life with him. God has saved us, not because of anything that we have done, but because of his amazing love for us.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
(Ephesians 2:8-10)
As Christians who are committed to the gospel, we seek to tell those around us the great news about Jesus. God has placed us in Lancaster for three or more years, giving us great opportunities to witness. While we are at university, we want to share the good news with our friends, and those in our colleges, houses, departments and sports teams.
At university we have unparalleled opportunities for sharing this good news, as we live among friends at a time of life when they are searching for answers. As a student group we are uniquely able to come alongside students and use university resources. As Christians together, it is normal to meet together to pray and encourage and support each other as we seek to share our faith with others. We can combine resources in order to put on events or meetings, and use each other’s gifts.
Lancaster CU is not a church. We all benefit from belonging to one of the local churches where we can serve and be supported. We also encourage and support each other to be members of other societies where we can serve and witness for Christ simultaneously.
